The Rubicon Tail : Thought you all might enjoy our last Adventure on the infamous Rubicon Trail. Some of my far more experienced off-road friends took me on the grand-daddy of off-road trails. I am man enough to admit, I almost had to change my underwear on a few passes where I had no idea my Jeep could ever pass through. Even my co-pilot, John Helmer who has more experience than I but has never tried the Rubicon Trail, kept making comments like, "Oh shit", "Woah", and "How the hell are you going to get past THAT?!". Fortunately I had my guru, Dennis Weber who would nonchalantly assured me "Just take it slow, pick you path, and if you tip over, we'll put you back on four wheels". If you ever meet Dennis, he is the only person who can actually make you feel better with a comment like "...if you tip over, we'll put you back on four wheels".

As soon as we arrived to the trail head, it was more than I had ever experienced and it never let up until we got to our campsite at Spyder Lake. As soon as I saw my buddy Bruce and told him that was absolutely unbelievable we got through that, he laughed and replied that is not even a drop in the bucket compared to the Little Sluice section around the corner from us. (The Little Sluice is where you see the monster climbers in the video) I did not believe him so he took me there and I knew they had to be joking. There were boulders taller than I surrounded by canyon walls. They HAD to be pulling my leg. The next morning, as you see on the video, they were not. The video does no justice to the magnitude of these boulders. It is something that needs to be seen firsthand to truly appreciate this feat of insanity.

The video of the broken driveshaft, axles, and towing was of Andy who after twisting his axle like a straw at McDonalds, simply pulled out the welder he built into his Land Cruiser and built a new drive shaft with spare parts from Dennis. These guys are hard core off roaders and the kind of people you want to be with when leaving pavement.

Fortunately, my Jeep survived with little more than a smashed rocker panel and with less than 75 yards from the exit, I came down too hard on my axle and broke a shock mount, which Gary "MacGyver", my new guru, fixed using the bolts off my license plate frame. Of course the damage does not take into account the new shape of my bumpers.

By the way, we made it back out in just over 3 hours which I was told was the best time they ever made. I checked my odometer. 3.7 miles! It took some of our group 15 hours to get in counting repair time.

Anyway, since I've taken most of you on a few off-road trails before, I thought you might enjoy my experience playing with the big boys. Next time I see you, I will have my new ARB locker axles, more skid plates, and another inch of lift on my Jeep to take you to another level of Jeepin'. Let me know when you want to go for a ride! Yeehaw!
